Intersectionality and Gender: The Influence of Western Medicalization and Beauty Standards on the Trans/GNC experience 

Presented by: Leiyomi Preciado (she/they), CPC, AAC

This interactive session invites participants to examine the role of medicalization and Western ideals of beauty and gender on the experiences of trans, non-binary and gender nonconforming individuals.  Participants will learn about the pathologizing of trans identities over time and reflect on the legacy of beliefs they may have inherited as mental health providers. This session will also consider intersectionality and the barriers to gender affirming care faced by individuals today, with specific attention paid to race, class and gender.

Deconstructing Gender Dysphoria: History, Diagnosis, and Assessment

Presented by: Matthew Goldenberg (he/him), PsyD

This session will explore the history and present-day usage of gender dysphoria diagnosis in gender affirming care. Participants can expect to deepen their understanding of issues in trans healthcare related to this diagnosis, including the impact of the gender binary, white supremacy, and capitalism. Dr. Goldenberg will help participants demystify the gender dysphoria assessment process, including a discussion of the DSM vs. the ICD9.  This training will also discuss body dysmorphia, eating disorders and cognitive abilities as they relate to assessment.

Gender 201 Toolkit: Practical Steps Towards Affirming Practice

Presented by: Hez Wollin (they/them), MSW, LICSW

If you’re an affirming provider looking to translate affirmation into basic, tangible steps you can take to support transgender and gender non-conforming individuals in the therapy room, this session is for you! Participants will critically analyze the historical and present-day roles of mental health providers in gender affirming care; increase their comfort with relevant language and terms; understand the basics of gender affirming medical intervention and receive support to self-reflect on their own beliefs and practices. Discussion of power, intersectionality and systemic oppression will be woven throughout.
